Hong Kong Q2 2026 Payment Data: Card and SVF Transaction Counts Rise as Values Diverge

HKMA Q2 2026 data show rising card and SVF transaction counts, divergent values and key payment-channel figures for business review.

Three data cards show credit-card transactions up 12.2% year on year with HK$286.5 billion in value, local retail value of 65.2% versus overseas retail value of 31.8%, and 90.38 million SVF accounts with HK$33.8 billion in online payments, accompanied by warnings that these are different datasets and not unique users.

Hong Kong’s Q2 2026 payment statistics show why transaction counts and values need to be reviewed separately. Credit-card transaction volume increased year on year, while stored-value-facility transaction volume also rose but its total value declined. The two HKMA releases cover different datasets and do not measure unique users.

Credit cards: more transactions, with value below the previous quarter

At the end of Q2 2026, Hong Kong had 31.03 million credit cards in circulation, up 6.3% quarter on quarter and 36.1% year on year.

There were 403.94 million credit-card transactions during the quarter, including retail transactions and cash advances. This was up 4.9% from the previous quarter and 12.2% from Q2 2025. Their total value was HK$286.5 billion, down 8.0% quarter on quarter but up 6.8% year on year.

The transaction value comprised:

  • HK$186.7 billion, or 65.2%, in local retail spending;
  • HK$91.1 billion, or 31.8%, in overseas retail spending; and
  • HK$8.8 billion, or 3.1%, in cash advances.

The published percentages add to 100.1% because of rounding.

Debit cards: quarterly volume rose while value fell

The number of debit cards in circulation is unavailable because a single card may carry overlapping debit-card brands.

Debit-card transactions relating to retail sales and bill payments reached 55.39 million, up 5.2% quarter on quarter but down 4.3% year on year. Their value was HK$61.1 billion, down 13.6% from the previous quarter and 8.0% year on year.

Stored value facilities: 90.38 million accounts in use

There were 90.38 million SVF accounts in use at the end of Q2 2026, up 1.8% quarter on quarter and 9.2% year on year. This figure counts accounts that could be used at the reporting date; it is not a count of unique people.

Approximately 2.2 billion SVF transactions were recorded, up 0.3% quarter on quarter and 3.6% year on year. Their total value was HK$264.7 billion, up 0.1% from the previous quarter but down 7.4% year on year.

The reported value components were:

  • point-of-sale spending payments: HK$47.7 billion;
  • online spending payments: HK$33.8 billion;
  • person-to-person fund transfers: HK$16.4 billion;
  • withdrawals: HK$59.6 billion; and
  • adding value: HK$107.2 billion.

SVF deposit and float stood at HK$21.8 billion, up 0.6% quarter on quarter and 7.3% year on year.

What retailers and e-commerce businesses can review

These figures do not establish changes in consumer preference, merchant sales or market share, and do not explain why a measure moved. Payment activity is sensitive to seasonal factors and the wider economic environment. Growth in transaction count can coexist with a decline in transaction value.

Businesses may use the releases as an external reference to review:

  1. Payment mix: Compare the business’s own card, SVF and other payment mix across physical and online channels while keeping unlike datasets separate.
  2. Channel reconciliation: Check whether payment records, order systems, refunds, payout reports and bank receipts reconcile consistently.
  3. Average-ticket caution: A simple value-to-count ratio may not represent a typical customer basket because the datasets have different scopes and include other activities.
  4. Commercial terms: Review refund, chargeback, processing-fee and settlement-timing terms against current contracts and procedures.
  5. Overseas transactions: Confirm pricing, exchange-rate, currency-conversion, fee and refund assumptions where overseas payments are accepted.
  6. Options and resilience: Review whether payment options fit the business model and whether fallback, incident-response and reconciliation procedures support continuity.

These are management-review prompts rather than provider recommendations or accounting instructions.
