Hong Kong’s June Export Volume Rises 34.3% as Trade Prices Also Climb
Hong Kong’s June 2026 export volume rose 34.3% while export prices increased 13.6%, showing that both physical trade and price effects supported trade-value growth.
Hong Kong’s merchandise trade expanded strongly in volume terms in June 2026, while higher prices also contributed to the increase in trade value. Figures released by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) on 13 August show that the volume of total exports of goods rose 34.3% year on year, while import volume increased 27.5%.
Volume measures discount the effect of price changes. They therefore provide a clearer view of how much merchandise moved than trade-value figures alone.
Volume growth extended across the first half
For the first half of 2026, export volume increased 28.7% and import volume rose 30.4% compared with the same period in 2025. On a seasonally adjusted basis, export and import volumes in the second quarter also increased by 6.6% and 2.2% respectively from the preceding quarter.
The destination data were uneven. Compared with June 2025, export volume rose to the USA by 85.2%, Taiwan by 60.5%, Vietnam by 40.5% and the Mainland by 36.9%, while export volume to India fell 8.8%. These aggregate movements should not be read as evidence of identical demand across products or companies.
Prices were also an important part of the value increase
Export prices rose 13.6% year on year in June, while import prices increased 12.7%. For the first half, export and import prices rose 7.9% and 7.6% respectively. The terms-of-trade index—the ratio of export prices to import prices—increased 0.8% in June and 0.3% in the first half from the corresponding periods of 2025.
The distinction matters: a rise in trade value can reflect both more goods moving and higher unit values. The June figures show that both volume and price effects were material.
What businesses should take from the data
The figures offer broad market context for businesses monitoring Hong Kong’s trading environment. They do not guarantee orders, revenue or profit for an individual company. Businesses should compare the headline data with their own product mix, destination markets, supply chains, pricing and customer information before drawing commercial conclusions.
