Hong Kong gold central clearing system in trial operation: formal launch scheduled for Q1 2027

Hong Kong's gold central clearing system is in trial operation, with formal launch scheduled for Q1 2027. Review provisional participation, pending DvP connectivity and international cooperation.

Gold bars and gold/payment settlement paths illustrate trial operation, a planned Q1 2027 formal launch and DvP connectivity still being finalised.

On 7 October 2026, the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau reported that the Hong Kong Gold Central Clearing and Settlement System was in trial operation, with formal launch scheduled for the first quarter of 2027. This is a market-infrastructure progress update for precious-metals trading and related logistics businesses, not a promise of returns, trading terms or new tax concessions.

Trial operation is not formal launch Secretary Christopher Hui told the Global Precious Metals Conference that trial operation had been well received. Eleven banks were serving as provisional direct participants, with other banks expressing interest. This does not establish formal access for every bank or business.

Delivery versus Payment connectivity remains in progress The Government says connection to Hong Kong's Real Time Gross Settlement system (RTGS) is in its final stages to enable Delivery versus Payment (DvP) settlements. The objective is to reduce settlement risk and operational friction. The announcement does not confirm completed connectivity or elimination of risk.

International cooperation has distinct milestones The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) plans to cohost its Asia Forum in Hong Kong in April 2027 with the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Precious Metals Central Clearing Company. A planned event is not proof of formal system launch.

The Government and the LBMA are also exploring cooperation on delivery standards. This remains exploratory, not confirmation that all Hong Kong infrastructure is LBMA-certified or that standards alignment is complete.

What can businesses monitor? Precious-metals trading, storage and logistics businesses can follow official announcements on the launch date, participation arrangements, settlement connectivity and international standards cooperation. Trial progress does not guarantee new orders, lower charges or better settlement terms for every business.
